                                    Ride to School
The noble children of the King’s City gathered and gossiped on the green commons of the King’s Academy.  Youths from various ages from eight to thirteen, both boys and girls were excited to begin a new year a primary school courses. But the true excitement came from a buzzing rumor that Crown Prince Elijah was beginning his schooling this very year!
These rumors are all true, of course. The young prince and his dearest friend were to arrive in any moment to the school.

“I bet all the other children will be cheering for us when we get there! Today is gonna be great, I tell ya. What do you think Eli?” Tristan Fabian bounced on his seat as he talked and the prince smiled at his friend’s delightment. Elijah was thrilled at the idea of starting his schooling but didn’t really have much to say on the subject so he just grinned widely and shrugged. Not that it mattered Tristan could speak for the both of them. “I heard that we’ll begin magic combat courses right after we take the Test.”

This did manage to get a laugh out Elijah. Tristan emulated his father’s natural ease in any fight and never passed up an opportunity to display his skills. Anthony Fabian, Tristan’s father, was the most important man in the kingdom second only to Elijah’s father, the King. He was the captain of the King’s Guard, general of the King’s army in peacetime, as well as the king’s chief advisor. Tristan, being Elijah’s closest friend, would more than likely inherit all of his father’s posts.

“Do you think you have any Ability?” the prince spoke for the first since they left the summer palace.

“I hope so. Fighting with magic would be awful fun. My father never had any, but maybe...maybe my mother had some magic in her blood. At least you don’t have to worry about any of that, being a prince and all,” he was quiet for awhile. Tristan never felt like talking if he was thinking about his mother.

Eli’s eyes wandered over to the darkened window and ignoring the guard’s commands opened the thick velvet curtain to reveal a much brighter world than the little royal carriage that had been taking them across the lowlands and the countryside. But when he looked out they were no longer in the lowlands or the countryside. The prince tapped his friend’s shoulder and pointed to the view rushing alongside them.

They were fast approaching the King’s City, their home. No matter how many times they had seen it, the sight of the shimmering city never ceased to dazzle. The magic-enforced glass windows and the gold-veined marble that most of the city’s older, grander buildings glinted the light of the mid morning sun. Their carriage hobbled over to the city gate. Both boys craned their necks to try and get a look at the King’s Watch, the tallest guard tower along the city gate. Tristan was still squinting at the Watch when Eli swiftly moved his hand the curtain collapsed back into place. A guard walked past a moment later, and the two giggled that they were almost caught in the heinous crime on opening when they were told not to.

“We're almost there. I heard we can see our fathers tonight.” Tristan was bouncing again the sour mood from earlier was all but gone. Tristan spent his summers with the Queen and Eli at the palace by the sea but nothing was better than coming home to see his father. This year was even better because this year he and his best friend could finally attend the King’s Academy.

They gone past the gates by now. Eli and Tristan huddled close to the window to see out the tiny crack of light to what went on in the only part of the city they never had been allowed to see, Poor Man’s Market. Their carriage drove along King’s Row that went straight through the entire city from King’s Gate to the palace, but the street they were on seem to be the only straight path in all of the market. The rest of the streets seem to twist and turn and loop around the strange city squares fountained life into every nook and cranny of the Market’s clusters of buildings.

Shopkeepers and stall runners were shouting out the wares and rates while others haggled prices till the ending sum was unrecognizable from what was originally asked for. Scantily dressed children and their chickens ran underfoot.

The buildings themselves had taken on the rambunctious life on the folks who lived and worked inside them. Some structures looked newer and had bright pigments painted over their doorways to attract customers and luck. Others looked as if they seen better days some odd years ago. While only one building was meant to last and that was a small stone temple that more than liking doubled as a basic magic school and might have been the orphanage since so many children around Eli and Tristan’s age clotted about its drab gray walls. There was only one thing that every building seemed to have in common; they all looked as if they squished and pulled and molded to fit into the market like and odd, over-sized puzzle. Prince Elijah gaped at a the wonderous place that would someday belong to him just like the rest of the Kingdom would.
This is the first bit that I had sectioned off. The title will change when I think of a better one. This is pure unedited writing! Don't berate my grammar or horrid writing just yet just point it out. BUT PLEASE TELL ME if you see anything that needs to change.
